Stewart McKinsey -
The 'SubContraBassist'

Stew McKinsey, who started playing music early in life, grew up in the 70s and got serious about playing in the 80’s after seeing a classmate’s punk band. While he was very much a metalhead at the time, his first teacher turned him on to pop, funk, and fusion. More importantly, he made Stew play the blues, explaining that it was the source for all contemporary western popular music.

Almost as soon as he picked up the bass he began to write and record his music. He took every opportunity to jam, to learn more about his art and craft. By the late 80’s, after meeting Roberto Vally and Jaco Pastorius, he decided to enroll in the Musicians Institute. Their prestigious staff at the time included Jeff Berlin, Gary Willis, Jim Lacefield, Steve Bailey, Alexis Sklarevsky and Tim Bogert. This was also when Stew encountered and became friends with Steuart Liebig and Michael Manring. For his first paying gig in Los Angeles, the opening band was John Goodsall (Brand X, Fire Merchants), Doug Lunn (Andy Summers, David Torn), and Chad Wackerman (Frank Zappa, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Vai)!

Currently Stew is working on his solo career, his first studio album, and is the bassist for the Brotherhood of Groove.
